I dislike Twitch

I started out streaming a few years ago, and quickly found an amazing community of streamers:

• The Golden Shrimp Guild: a lovely international collective of musicians who run regular streaming festivals.
• Emma McGann: an actual professional music streamer & alt-rock powerhouse, who mentored me via Help Musicians & Copilot in 2023.
• My mates (who probably don't wish to be named). Mostly not streaming themselves now, but they've alerted me to the excellent streams of comedian Sean Morley.

But despite the presence of all this excellence, I am desparately trying to limit my participation in Big Tech. Twitch is owned by Amazon, which is owned by billionaire/fascist Jeff Bezos. I don't think Jeff needs any more money off us, so I prefer to use Owncast.

To give me more time to make art, I'm aiming to go utterly hog-wild on the sales pitches on stream. And what better, more Professional Streamer way to do that, than whip out some tasty chat bots and eye-candy stream overlays?

I made some streaming tools

Gabe Kangas is soon releasing a major new version of Owncast, featuring a new plugins system. The time is now ripe for me to swoop in, with my Professional Streamer agenda.

I hope these tools are useful to others.

1. ghost-subs: an owncast plugin that tells chat when someone has subscribed.
2. ghost-subs-overlay: a browser source overlay for OBS, that shows a subs goal and progress bar.

The second one requires a bit more command-line knowledge, but feel free to gimme a shout on Mastodon if you need any help.
